podcast Ebook day in the life
Welcome to the Dietitian Boss Podcast. I'm Libby Rothschild, creator of Dietitian Boss. After almost four years of sitting in my dimly lit windowless clinical office, I had enough. I wanted to feel like my work mattered, so I did something about it. I created a program that empowers dietitians to create their own private practice from scratch following my proprietary.
Before I did this, I had a private practice of my own while working a full-time job, and I learned a lot about building relationships, marketing and sales, and I'm so excited to be able to share my proprietary framework with you.
You might be wondering, what is it like to be a dietitian? To live a day in the life of selling an ebook. Now, an e-book is a forum, it's a digital product, and there's a huge opportunity for dietitians to create ebooks because you can sell them an infinite amount of times and you can also create them when you are working a full-time job.
If you are working a part-time job, if you're not able to or interested in providing counseling or consulting, or if you work another job, maybe you are working in a private practice, but you wanna create an additional revenue stream. And help more people. So there, I don't think that there's any reason why a dietitian would not want to create an ebook.
In fact, I think every dietitian should, and I think you can create multiples. But let's talk about starting with one. So what would it be like and what does it feel like? And can I break this down step by step? So first, An e-book is beneficial because it is passive income, and that means that you can make money by setting up systems that can work for you.
Now, that's gonna take some work. So it's not just done when you have the e-book completed, there's a lot of research and there's gonna be some marketing lessons that you're gonna have to learn, and you're gonna have to build your email list and grow your audience and understand what people want and need.
And that's a process and I have a system framed out step by step in my framework to show you how to do that. But I wanna share why it is important. It's important because you can create passive income and once you get your system set up and you can create an ebook that people want and need that they buy and they love and they recommend to their friends, well that's a sign that you're on the right.
Track. When you create an ebook, you are setting up systems to make money passively. You are also helping more people by expanding your reach and sending those positive messages about dietitians and all the great things that we can do to help consumers achieve their nutrition outcomes.
In terms of why this might be popular and I, I think. It's pretty self-explanatory, like we're all looking to not get burned out. We know the research, especially with healthcare practitioners, if you are working in a clinical setting or depending on what you're doing, you might have already a private practice, but you wanna create additional revenue streams and you don't want to create an additional revenue stream, that's gonna be something that you can't keep up with.
And maybe you're at your max with coaching or you don't like the idea of coaching, which is okay, and you. Other ways to help people, and that would be the benefit of creating an ebook. Now, in terms of what is it? An ebook is short for an electronic book, and it's a digital publication that is meant to be read on electronic devices like smartphones, your iPhone or a tablet, laptop, or an dedicated e-reader device.
Do you have an E-reader? My husband loves his Kindle. I have a Kindle, but I haven't used it in a really long time, and I use my iPad sometimes. eBooks are typically formatted as PDF files or as interactive documents with rich media, so they can have audio, video, and interactive elements, but typically they're gonna focus on the text and it may be a few images and eBooks are easily distributed and downloaded over the internet, which makes them accessible to a global audience.
And that is the benefit that dietitians can derive from an ebook is really helping more people. And you're not offering counseling or, or consultation. So there, there's less fear when it comes to licensure and, and m and t and e-books can cover a wide range of subjects. So you can talk about a lot of different things.
So you can have various e-books. About different topics, but I would just start with one topic and I'll go over some examples as we continue today's episode. And I want you to know my experience. I created an e-book and right now it's not available, so I took it off of my website, but I'm thinking about bringing it back.
And this e-book was about starting your practice in 30 days, and it did really well, meaning it sold well. People really enjoyed it, and they ended up liking the ebook so much that a lot of the people that bought the ebook ended up buying coaching with. , which was great cuz that way I was able to help more people and have them get a sense of what my framework is and how my system supports them step by step.
So I have experience from creating that ebook and it was fairly simple and it was more of a workbook style where I had lessons, but I also had you fill out questions and answers. And then I have another ebook on the way that I've been working on, which is a little bit about my story and to be continued in terms of when that'll be published.
The process of creating and selling an e-book is pretty simple. So I have two done for you e-books that I give you when you become a member in our membership. And in those e-books, you would just swap out your name and if you want to, you can swap a couple elements. But the idea is that you're gonna keep it the way it is cause it is done for you.
So all you have to do is upload it on a learning management system. Teachable or Kajabi, or if you're already using an EMR, you can actually upload the e-book onto your EMR and sell it through there, like practice better. So all you have to do , when you have the e-book done, is to find a portal to upload it that you can sell it from.
Now, you don't, there's a lot of sophisticated ways you can sell e-books, and I'm not suggesting that you find the most co complicated route. You can choose an easy way to distribute your ebook, especially if you're getting started. You really wanna focus less on optimizing your technology and more on talking to people to make sure that the ebook that you've created or that you want to create.
Is a problem that they experience. So if you can solve a problem in your e-book and you can create content around what people will pay for and related to nutrition, then you're well on your way towards impacting more people on a global scale. And after all, that's what we do as dietitians who wanna help more people.
And again, it's profitable as well if you're able to sell them. And that's, that's the whole catch. Is that you wanna learn this step by step strategy to market and sell your ebook, which is, I'm gonna walk you through part of that. So the process is, deciding on your topic, and part of that process would be talking to people and identifying what they wanna need.
And I have a whole step-by-step framework and a market research tracker that you can fill out to start analyzing trends and applying your critical thinking skills in terms of what people want. And then you would package that e-book or just use one, am I done for you E-books in the meantime. And you can use a free tool like Canva to create the ebook.
Now, Canva has a lot. Pre-made templates that you can just plug and place some of your text and swap out a few stock images, or you can even put an image of you on there at the end or all throughout the ebook if you'd like. So it's never been easier to create an e-book because our technology has evolved.
To make it so user-friendly for us dietitians to create, publish, and sell eBooks. And it's exciting. It's an opportunity that we can pretty much all get on because again, it's not gonna take a lot of time. It's not gonna take time to deliver the ebook. Once you set it up on your technology, the time and energy is really spent in the marketing.
And then of course, talking to people and getting feedback from customers and finding out how to improve your e. Now if you're wondering what possible titles are, I wanna give you a list of a few. You could do the Ultimate Guide to Mindful. The plant-based diet for optimal health. Low Carb revolution, a comprehensive guide to the dash diet, lower your blood pressure and improve your health.
The gut health handbook, improving digestion and boosting immunity. Intermittent fasting plan for weight loss and better health. The Flexitarian Diet. A guide to Eating More plants and less meat. An anti-inflammatory diet can back chronic pain and inflammation. The Mediterranean Diet, a heart healthy approach to eating and a ketogenic diet, a low carb, high fat approach to better health.
Now I know you're gonna think that last one was controversial. I did wanna put it in there because it is a title That would be something that would sell if you align with that philosophy. If not, no worries because you're a Dietitian Boss. We respect and appreciate different people's perspectives, whether that be fat, positive.
Weight loss or weight neutrality. So moving on you need an ebook as a reminder, because it is an alternative revenue stream, you can help reach more people, and eBooks are typically affordable price points, so that way you can increase your impact. If someone can't afford one year more higher price services like your workshop or your coaching, then you can say, no problem.
I have this Mediterranean Diet, a heart healthy approach to eating ebook for, you know, $20, $19, $29. And that way it helps you provide at what's called a down sell. Meaning if somebody's not ready to purchase one of your services, that's more expensive. They can, they do have access to something that would be more in their price range.
In terms of where you can make one, I already explained that Canva is a great resource. There's other resources and tools. Canva's my favorite. It's something that we teach. It's something that our clients find very easy to use. And I gotta say when four years ago, when I first started this business, Canva had not evolved the way it has today, and I am so impressed with it as a tool.
Even the free version of Canva is so robust. You might not even need to pay it first. It's just, it's really incredible once you give yourself some time and, and there's a little bit of a learning curve, but not too hard, give yourself 30 to 60 minutes. Play around with it and you will be so impressed with what you can do to create marketing assets such as social media posts, presentations.
You can even create a web page you can record in Canva. It is so impressive. And as far as who's done it our client fit team, Corey has created an e-book. We have a lot of clients that have created e-book. I'm gonna play a little clip from. Hi, Libby wanted to share my weekly win. So I launched the Paralysis Nutrition Cookbook.
It's my first product in, in addition to coaching. So my goal was to launch Friday, which I did, and to sell 25 copies by today, Monday. And so far I have sold 55 copies of the book. Last time I checked, so doubled my sales goal, which is super exciting. So that was really exciting to hear in terms of Fatima exceeding her goals when she sold her cookbook.
So she had a short cookbook, and that is another example of how you can package an ebook. And so I wanted to share with you her actual story to inspire you. So now if you're wondering a day in the of selling an ebook as a dietitian, so it might look like this depending on your other offers that you're selling in the morning at 8:00 AM , it just said 8:00 AM maybe yours is 5:00 AM I don't know.
Let me know on social media, if you're a 5:00 AM riser, you're gonna check and respond to emails related to ebook sales and customer inquiries because as for as many sales as you get, you might have someone reaching out and asking you a few questions about possibly purchasing. Then you're gonna review and analyze ebook sales data and determine which marketing strategy is working best, and then identify areas to improve.
For example, if people are coming to you when you're selling through your email marketing, then that might mean that that's a really good place to spend more time and energy. Versus if you're not really doing great at, let's say your in-person presentations, you're not getting a lot of people that are interested, or maybe social media is or isn't working the way you want it to, but you're noticing that email marketing conversion rates are higher.
So that's a great example of how to identify and analyze what sales are working best. And at 10:00 AM you might wanna plan and execute a social media strategy to promote the e-book. And that could mean you're hopping on Canva, right? You've thought about your, what strategy you're gonna use, you know what posts you're gonna create, and you start creating them on Canva, preferably.
And you'd batch create your content. So you would make content for at least. A week or a month ahead. And that's gonna help you not get so anxious about creating content on a regular basis, cuz you're gonna have a schedule and created ahead of time and know that you're promoting that e-book. In my membership, I have templates, captions that are done for you and Instagram posts that are already templated and created that you can use.
So it makes that process easier. And there's a lot of great free planning tools that you can use, including the Meta Suite on Facebook that allows you to auto schedule for. And Instagram now lets you schedule your posts inside the app. How cool is that? Gone are the days when you have to use a third party app, although if you are and you love it, by all means, stick with it.
I have used almost every single one of them and I'm really happy that Instagram now lets you plan inside the app. I think that's super cool. And then let's say that you're taking your lunch break at noon and hopefully you're taking a full hour and you are taking some time to relax and whether it's put on a face mask or for me, I like to take my dog Hamilton for a walk.
He needs to go on a lot walks. He is a baby, and I just try to make time for my lunch break to unplug and give yourself some break. So let's say that the day of the life of an ebook business owner as a dietician would require also some time away from business. And then at one you're gonna come back to work and reach out to some possible influencers or people in a similar space.
I know that some of our clients, I'm pretty sure Fatima, just cuz I mentioned her and shared her story, believe she did that. So are there people that are, have a similar niche or industry that you can collaborate with or see if you can share your message with their audience and that can help you promote The ebook that could be on a podcast, could be on Instagram stories.
There's various ways that you can do. And that's really gonna help you increase your impact and your reach. Then at three, you wanna write and publish a blog post about the e-book, including maybe a call to action to have people purchase the e-book. So if you're doing a blog post, or maybe you're doing a podcast episode, or maybe you're creating a YouTube video, whatever you've chosen for your strategy, you wanna make sure to create.
and tell people to purchase the e-book. And when you're telling them to purchase the e-book, you wanna be really clear as to why. So for example, with Fatima's book, it helps you with weight management, with weight loss and bowel regulations for those who are paralyzed. And so she would promote that book talking about why you would buy that book and that same promotion.
So you were making sure to use what's. Call to action so you don't wanna forget that part and tell people to purchase your book. And then at 5:00 PM and again, this does sound like a busy day, but I wanna give you an ideal kind of scenario. You might participate in an online webinar. Or q and a session about the ebook to engage with potential customers and answer their questions so you can run a webinar.
I don't know if any of you went to my recent webinar. I've got another one coming up and I'm promoting my membership. But if I was doing a webinar for my ebook, I would totally incorporate that. So that's a great way for you to reach more people, have them attend your live webinar, and you can have that be a free option to promote your e-book.
And then at let's say 6:00 PM you wanna review and update your sales page on your canva or your sales page on wherever you're selling it. So it could be that you've uploaded your ebook onto maybe you, you either have your own website or maybe you're just using a learning management system like Teachable, and you're using their sales page, which is free.
You can use a free account and they just would take a percentage of the fee when someone purchases your ebook until you, you know, use a paid plan. So you might be updating your sales page on the actual teachable. because that's sufficient until you decide to invest in a website or you're actually making some adjustments on your webpage.
So it's just gonna depend on where you're at in your business in terms of what technology you're using. And then at 7:00 PM you're gonna relax and unwind, cuz that sounds like a productive day. So that was an example of a very full day of a lot of content creation. And I've talked a lot about time management, but for me, I like to batch.
Content on one day and client calls on another day, and sales and team on another day. So for me, I would think that that is a lot for me for one day. But let's say you only wanna work one and a half, two days a week. That might be a great way for you to get stuff done in your business and tick things off of your checklist.
So I hope that was helpful In terms of a day in the life of selling an ebook, what is an ebook? What are examples of ebook titles? Why do you need one, and who can it? And what good would it do for you as a dietitian? I hope that you learn those things today, and I can't wait to re-release my ebook again and have it incorporated into my strategy so that more dietitians can really learn how to start and grow their private practice to reach more people and start making money to live that flexible lifestyle.
