[00:00:00] If you're looking to grow your business as a registered dietitian, you've come to the right place. If you're not sure what to do or what steps to take next so that you can create flexibility and freedom in your life, then you're going to learn a lot from tuning into our podcast here at Dietitian Boss.
[00:00:17] I'm Libby Rothschild, the founder of Dietitian Boss, a fellow [00:00:20] registered dietitian and business owner. And in our podcast, I share the highs and the lows, and I talk all about how to grow your business. Get it started. And I interview our clients to date. We've had over 200 interviews from clients who share their journey on our podcast.
[00:00:36] Dietitian boss.
[00:00:37] Libby: Do you wish there was a way to grow your dietitian [00:00:40] business without spending endless hours on social media or relying only on referrals? Imagine having prospective clients find you because they already trust your voice and expertise, even before they schedule a consult. Here's a surprising fact.
[00:00:54] Libby: Podcasting generates up to 4. 4 times better brand recall than other forms [00:01:00] of digital content. According to Nielsen, this is a game changer for dietitians like us who want to stand out as the go to expert. I want to share a quick story. When I launched my podcast, I felt nervous seven, eight years ago, thinking, I'm not sure who's going to listen.
[00:01:16] Libby: And would I run out of topics? But within the first [00:01:20] month dietitians were reaching out saying that they feel like they got to know me and they enjoyed the topics I was discussing because podcasting builds trust at scale. Unlike any other platform. So podcasting works for dietitians, so you might wonder why exactly is podcasting such a powerful tool?
[00:01:38] Libby: Well, podcasting builds [00:01:40] authority and trust. So when you speak directly to your audience, you're not just sharing tips, you're becoming their go to expert. Podcasting creates an intimate connection that social media can't replicate, and you also reach a targeted audience, which can be difficult in other ways to reach them.
[00:01:58] Libby: So whether your niche is diabetes, [00:02:00] prenatal nutrition, food freedom, or some other chronic disease, podcast platforms let you target those specific interests. People are literally searching for your specialty. And you can also create evergreen content. So unlike Instagram posts that can vanish within a day, depending on the algorithm updates, podcast episodes live forever.[00:02:20]
[00:02:20] Libby: Now I still get leads, dietitians that come to us from an episode that I recorded years ago. And it's like planting seeds that keep growing. So I want to share with you recently, a few months ago, we had Elena, a past client, a fellow dietitian boss who started her podcast on intuitive eating. And even when she lost her [00:02:40] Instagram account, which she explains on the interview that we posted recently.
[00:02:44] Libby: Her podcast consistently attracted clients. So that's the power of podcasting. It provides stability and visibility in your business, even when things happen with social media that we can't quite control. The creating podcast episodes is a combination [00:03:00] of an art and a science. So let's talk about What that looks like now that we've discussed why podcasting is so effective, because you want to truly engage your audience.
[00:03:10] Libby: So firstly, you want to choose the right topics. So start by listening to your client's biggest struggles. Each struggle can become an entire episode. So [00:03:20] here are a few topic ideas that you might want to jot down. For example, diabetes, you can talk about or have an episode that's titled five myths about diabetes nutrition.
[00:03:30] Libby: You need to stop believing or if you're in the prenatal space, you could say what to eat in your first trimester for a healthy pregnancy. And I can come up [00:03:40] with a dozen other topic ideas. I just wanted you to know a few episode titles that you can consider for your podcast. The storytelling is really important.
[00:03:48] Libby: So you want to open with a personal anecdote or client success story to relate to your listeners, follow a problem solution framework. So you're highlighting the issue, providing a solution to the [00:04:00] issue and then offering actionable steps, even just one step. Following that framework will help give you some loose structure going into recording those episodes.
[00:04:09] Libby: Now, when it comes to structuring, you want to think about a consistent format, some type of an intro, main content, actionable takeaway, and then a clear call to action, meaning you're telling the listeners [00:04:20] what to specifically do. Aiming for 20 to 30 minutes per episode is a good start. Your audience will appreciate concise content.
[00:04:29] Libby: Using guest experts is another great way to build your audience and to build your expertise. You can collaborate with professionals like fitness trainers or obstetricians [00:04:40] to bring in specialized Insights and to expand your reach. Now, this will depend on who you want to come on to the podcast based on your specialty.
[00:04:48] Libby: So, if you're in the bariatric space, you would have different guest experts versus if you were in the food freedom space. So, think strategically about who might be a good person to interview. I'm always a fan of having your clients come on [00:05:00] if they're willing. So, let's talk about a quick recap here. Why podcasting builds trust.
[00:05:05] Libby: We also discussed how to choose topics based on your clients struggles. And we talked about structuring episodes effectively and consistently. I want to now segue into tools and tech to simplify podcasting. Now, this topic is so [00:05:20] important because most of the hangups come with tech.
[00:05:22] Libby: So 1 objection that I've heard a lot over the years when it comes to our dietitians, clients and communities starting a podcast is they say, I'm not tech savvy. I don't want you to worry because starting a podcast is easier than you think. So let's break this down. 1st, you're recording an. Editing tools.
[00:05:38] Libby: So you can try beginner friendly [00:05:40] tools like Audacity or GarageBand. And if you want advanced features, you can use Descript. Now we use Descript. It's about 10 or $15 a month, depending on the plan. And that, of course, could change as the software updates. And Descript is a very user friendly tool that integrates ai.
[00:05:57] Libby: But you don't have to start with script. You can [00:06:00] start with a free tool like Audacity or GarageBand. Now you're also going to need a microphone, which is important because good sound quality will help engage your community. So you can start with the Blue Yeti for crisp audio, a very affordable option.
[00:06:13] Libby: Next, let's talk about hosting platforms. You can use Buzzsprout or Anchor. So they distribute your episodes to [00:06:20] platforms like Spotify and Apple podcasts. And when I first started, I used Libsyn and now we actually use Kajabi to host our podcasts, but we've used different platforms in the past and we've been doing this for seven years now.
[00:06:32] Libby: And then there's promotion tools. So Canva is great for creating episode graphics. You can use a template, meaning you have the same [00:06:40] template in Canva that you duplicate and just adjust the text and image depending on the podcast that you're creating. Now, you can also use, other tools if you want to add audiograms to share to social media, but I would start with Canva as a basic way to get your episodes out there and published.[00:07:00]
[00:07:00] Libby: And I also want to share that you can use free Canva for a lot of options, but if certain graphics will require a paid account. So it just depends on how you're using Canva. I do believe that the paid version of Canva is worth it, mainly because there's a lot of great AI features we can talk about in a different episode.
[00:07:17] Libby: So how podcasting can grow your business now [00:07:20] that we've talked about tech, let's discuss in depth about how podcasting can help grow your business so you can generate leads, meaning people who are interested in purchasing your product or service. So, you can mention your services casually. So, for example, you can say something along the lines of, in my practice, I helped newly diagnosed diabetics, and [00:07:40] then fill in the dots with how you helped lower blood sugar, et cetera, whatever your statement is in terms of how you help people and saying this. On your podcast during your episodes is going to position you as an expert without sounding salesy. This is just a natural progression. Whether you're sharing tips and tricks and talking about what you do, you can easily upsell [00:08:00] services or products by offering discounts. If that aligns with your podcast listeners. You can also talk about certain launches that you have. Maybe you just came out with an ebook or you're offering a group program or you started accepting insurance. You can mention all of your products and services on air naturally. You can also build brand partnerships if that aligns with [00:08:20] their goals.
[00:08:20] Libby: So brands love niche podcasts. For example, if you're in the space of diabetes or prenatal. So if you focus on prenatal nutrition, for example, there are baby food brands that may want to sponsor your episodes. I want you to avoid common podcasting mistakes that can hold you back. So let's cover some [00:08:40] mistakes that you might be thinking about or already making.
[00:08:42] Libby: The biggest mistake includes inconsistent publishing. So you do want to decide on a schedule. For example, will you publish weekly, bi weekly, or monthly? And then stick to it. Not knowing your audience is another big mistake. So you want to focus on a specific listeners [00:09:00] needs. You'll lose interest. If you're too broad with the needs of several people.
[00:09:05] Libby: So that's why I gave the examples earlier of newly diagnosed diabetic prenatal nutrition, et cetera. Poor audio quality is another mistake that's easy to fix. Microphones are very affordable. You do want to record in a quiet space with a decent [00:09:20] mic. Things happen unforeseen construction can happen in the background.
[00:09:23] Libby: Maybe your dog's barking. You just want to do your best to have decent audio quality and a microphone. So let's talk about some actionable takeaways and next steps. Here's what to do next. I want you to draft your first three episodes based on your client's biggest struggles. Then I want you [00:09:40] to schedule one to two hours for recording each month to batch record if possible.
[00:09:45] Libby: That's going to help you have your content for your schedule ahead of time. Finally, I want you to take our marketing stage quiz to unlock 10 ready to use podcast episode outlines. And you can find that quiz at dietitianboss. com [00:10:00] to learn about where you are with your business, what stage of marketing you have at this moment.
[00:10:06] Libby: So podcasting isn't about perfection. It's about connection. You want to start small, stay consistent and watch your business grow. Thank you so much. I've enjoyed chatting with you today and I look forward to seeing you next time.
